9 Steps in the Recruitment Process Every Employer Should Know
Every stage of a hire — who owns it, how long it takes, the most common mistake at each step, and the metrics that tell you…
Mumbai’s technology workforce sits across five or six distinct employer segments — IT services giants, captive technology centres of global banks, consumer internet and gaming companies, BFSI in-house tech arms, and a growing base of global capability centres. Each hires differently, pays differently and closes candidates differently. If you are recruiting engineers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the company you lose a candidate to tells you more than the salary they walked away for.
This guide maps that landscape by segment rather than pretending to rank employers: what each hires for, how they pay, how their interview processes are shaped, and what that means when you are competing for the same shortlist. As a recruitment agency in Mumbai placing technology professionals since 2001, we spend most of our week on exactly this problem — how a 200-person firm wins a candidate who also holds an offer from a name everyone recognises.
Tata Consultancy Services is headquartered in Mumbai, and the city hosts substantial delivery presence for Infosys, Wipro, LTIMindtree, Tech Mahindra and Capgemini’s India operations, with campuses spread across Powai, Andheri, Thane, Navi Mumbai and the Airoli–Vashi belt.
What they hire for: Java, .NET, mainframe and legacy modernisation, SAP and Oracle functional and technical roles, testing and automation, cloud migration, infrastructure and service desk, plus large volumes of fresher intake through campus programmes.
Pay posture: conservative at entry and mid-level, structured around bands and internal parity rather than market-matching individuals, becoming competitive at architect and delivery leadership levels. Annual increments are usually modest, which is precisely why services engineers switch — a move is often the only way to reset the number.
Hiring process: high-volume and standardised — typically an aptitude test, one or two technical rounds and HR. Quick at junior levels, considerably slower at senior levels because of internal approval layers.
What this means for you: services companies are the largest pool you can recruit from. An engineer with five to eight years in a services firm is often ready for a role with more ownership and will move for scope as much as money. That is where a smaller employer has a genuine advantage.
Mumbai is India’s financial capital, so it is unsurprising that global investment banks run significant technology and operations centres here — JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Barclays are among the widely known names with a long-standing technology presence in the city and in Navi Mumbai and BKC.
What they hire for: low-latency and core Java, Python for quant and risk platforms, C++ in trading technology, data engineering, cloud platform and SRE, cyber security, and a deep bench of production support and application support engineers.
Pay posture: typically the strongest cash-plus-bonus posture in the city for comparable experience, with structured annual bonuses that make a mid-year exit expensive for the candidate. That bonus calendar is a scheduling fact you can plan around.
Hiring process: long and panel-heavy — multiple technical rounds, a hiring manager round, often a cross-functional “bar raiser” style round, plus rigorous verification and compliance checks. Six to ten weeks from application to offer is not unusual.
What this means for you: their slowness is your opening. If you can run a complete, respectful process in twelve days while a bank is still scheduling round three, you will win candidates you had no business winning on compensation alone. Our banking and finance recruitment desk plans around bonus payout months for exactly this reason.
Mumbai’s product ecosystem is smaller than Bengaluru’s but real and growing. Dream11 and Games24x7 are well-known Mumbai-headquartered gaming and fantasy sports employers; Rebel Foods runs its technology out of Mumbai; Zomato, Swiggy and PhonePe all maintain a presence in the city alongside their primary hubs elsewhere.
What they hire for: backend engineers at scale, mobile (Android, iOS, React Native), data science and machine learning, platform and DevOps, product managers and designers.
Pay posture: aggressive on total compensation for strong engineers, frequently including ESOPs. Cash may be comparable to a bank, but equity and the pace of promotion are the pitch. Process runs faster than a bank’s, and they close hard once they decide.
Indian banks and financial groups — HDFC, ICICI, Kotak and Aditya Birla Capital among the publicly known names — run substantial in-house digital and technology functions in and around Mumbai. They hire for digital channel engineering, core banking integration, the payments and UPI stack, data and analytics, risk technology, and a growing volume of information security and regulatory technology work driven by RBI requirements.
Pay posture: middle of the market on base, with better stability and clearer domain progression than a services firm, and less volatility than a startup.
Beyond banking, a widening set of multinational retailers, manufacturers, insurers and healthcare groups run capability centres in the MMR and in Pune, absorbing engineering, analytics and enterprise applications talent. They are covered in more detail in our companion guide on GCCs in India and how they hire.
| Segment | Typical roles | Pay posture | What they compete on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian IT services | Java, .NET, SAP, testing, cloud migration, support | Band-driven, conservative below senior levels | Scale, brand recognition, onsite opportunity, job security |
| Global bank tech centres | Core Java, Python, C++, data engineering, SRE, cyber | Strong cash plus structured annual bonus | Compensation, global exposure, domain depth |
| Consumer internet and gaming | Backend at scale, mobile, ML, DevOps, product | Aggressive total comp, ESOP-weighted | Ownership, engineering culture, pace, equity upside |
| BFSI in-house tech | Digital channels, payments, analytics, infosec | Market-median base, stable | Stability, domain career path, regulated-sector credibility |
| GCCs and shared services | Enterprise apps, analytics, engineering, support | Premium over services, below top banks | Work-life balance, global reporting lines, structure |
Watch out for the counter-offer window. The most common way a Mumbai tech offer collapses is not a rival offer at the shortlist stage — it is the candidate’s current employer reacting during a 60 or 90 day notice period. Assume the counter-offer will come, raise it openly at the offer conversation, and stay in weekly contact for the entire notice period. Silence between offer acceptance and joining date is where hires are lost.
You are not going to out-brand TCS or out-bonus a global bank, and you should stop trying. What consistently works instead:
The employers named above are less obstacles than a map of where the talent currently sits and what has to be beaten to move it. Once you know which segment your ideal candidate is in, you can build a brief, a process and an offer designed to win that specific person rather than an advertisement competing with everyone at once.
