Top GCCs in India and How They Hire (2026)

Global capability centres have quietly become the most influential force in Indian white-collar hiring. What began in the 1990s as back-office cost arbitrage is now where multinationals run product engineering, quantitative research, drug safety, vehicle software and enterprise data platforms. For anyone competing for the same engineers, analysts and finance professionals, GCCs set the pay, process and work-culture expectations in every major Indian city.

This guide covers GCCs from an employer’s point of view: how the sector has grown, which categories exist and where they cluster, how their hiring actually runs, what their pay posture does to your local market, and how a non-GCC employer should respond rather than simply losing candidates to them. Drawn from mandates we run as a recruitment agency in Mumbai placing professionals across technology, BFSI, pharma and engineering since 2001.

The scale of the GCC sector in India

India is widely reported to host well over 1,600 global capability centres employing in the region of 1.8 to 2 million people, with industry bodies projecting continued double-digit growth through the second half of this decade. Treat those as indicative sector-level figures rather than precise counts — definitions of what qualifies as a GCC vary between studies.

Two shifts matter more than the raw numbers. First, the work has moved up the value chain: GCCs now house product ownership, architecture, data science, actuarial and R&D functions previously kept at headquarters. Second, expansion has spread beyond Bengaluru and Hyderabad into Pune, Chennai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the NCR and increasingly tier-two cities such as Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur and Kochi.

The main categories of GCC — and where they cluster

BFSI and financial services

The oldest and deepest category. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and Barclays are among the widely known global financial institutions operating substantial capability centres in India. They hire heavily for core engineering, quantitative analysis, risk and compliance, financial crime and anti-money-laundering operations, data engineering and cyber security. Main hubs: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune, with strong Chennai presence for operations.

Retail and consumer

Walmart, Target and Lowe’s are among the well-known retailers running technology and analytics centres in India, typically covering e-commerce platform engineering, supply chain and merchandising systems, pricing analytics and store technology. Bengaluru is the dominant hub, with Hyderabad and Chennai following.

Healthcare and pharmaceuticals

Novartis and Pfizer are among the global pharmaceutical groups with significant capability centres in India, covering clinical data management, pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, biostatistics, medical writing and commercial analytics. Hyderabad and Bengaluru lead, with Mumbai strong on regulatory and commercial roles and Chennai on clinical operations.

Automotive and engineering R&D

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India and Bosch are long-established examples of engineering R&D centres in the country, with work spanning embedded software, vehicle electronics, ADAS, CAE and simulation, and increasingly software-defined vehicle platforms. Bengaluru, Pune and Chennai are the primary clusters.

Technology and software

Global technology firms run some of the largest product engineering centres in India, hiring for cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, SRE, machine learning and product management. Bengaluru and Hyderabad dominate, with Pune and NCR expanding.

Energy and industrial

Shell is among the widely known energy majors operating a capability centre in India, with work spanning technology, engineering, trading support and finance. Bengaluru and Chennai are the main locations, with sector-adjacent hiring in Mumbai and Vadodara.

How GCC hiring processes actually work

If you have lost a candidate to a GCC, it was almost never because their process was faster. It is worth understanding the shape of it:

Pay posture and the rest of the package

GCC compensation is generally reported to sit at a premium to Indian IT services for comparable experience — commonly framed in industry commentary as somewhere in the 20 to 50 per cent range depending on role, city and specialisation, with the gap widest in niche areas such as quantitative research, embedded software and machine learning. That is an indicative range, not a rule; a strong Indian product company will out-pay a mid-tier GCC for the same engineer.

Cash is only part of it. The rest of the pitch typically includes structured annual bonuses, global mobility and short-term assignments abroad, comprehensive medical cover extending to parents, generous parental leave, meaningful learning budgets, defined career frameworks and — often decisive for mid-career candidates — predictable working hours and hybrid flexibility. When you lose a candidate to a GCC, one of these is frequently the actual reason.

The market effect is local, not national. When a large GCC opens or expands in a city, salary expectations in that specific micro-market often reset within two or three quarters — not just for the roles the GCC is hiring, but for adjacent roles, because your own people start benchmarking against what their peers are now being offered. If a major centre has announced expansion in your city, review your compensation bands proactively. Reacting to your third resignation is significantly more expensive than a planned correction.

How non-GCC employers should respond

Trying to out-pay a global bank’s capability centre is not a strategy. What works:

Frequently asked questions

Which Indian cities have the highest GCC concentration?
Bengaluru remains the clear leader by centre count, followed by Hyderabad, Pune, the NCR, Chennai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mumbai’s GCC base skews strongly towards BFSI, insurance and pharmaceutical functions, reflecting the city’s existing industry concentration. Tier-two locations including Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur and Kochi are growing as cost and attrition pressures push expansion outwards.
Can a mid-sized company realistically hire people who also have GCC offers?
Yes, regularly — but on different grounds. The winning arguments are ownership of a whole problem, direct access to decision-makers, faster career progression and a shorter process. What does not work is competing purely on fixed CTC or hoping the candidate will overlook a two-month hiring process.
Are GCCs a good source of candidates for us to recruit from?
They can be, particularly for candidates who have hit a ceiling on scope within a global structure and want broader ownership. Expect strong process discipline and technical fundamentals, and screen carefully for whether the person has operated with less structure and fewer support functions than they are used to.
How much notice do GCC employees typically serve?
Commonly 60 to 90 days, in line with broader corporate practice in India, and background verification adds further time before joining. Factor at least three months from offer to start date, and keep structured contact through the whole period — the counter-offer risk is highest in weeks two to four of notice.

Hiring in a GCC-dominated market

GCCs are not going to stop expanding, and every employer hiring skilled professionals in India is now recruiting in their shadow. The employers who cope well are the ones who have accepted that, adjusted their bands deliberately, tightened their process to a speed a global panel cannot match, and stopped competing for exactly the same profile that every capability centre filter is optimised to select.

Ace Corporate Services has placed over 5,000 professionals with 500+ client companies across 15+ industries since 2001, including hiring for technology, BFSI, pharmaceutical and engineering organisations competing directly with capability centres for talent.
