Engineering Salary Guide Mumbai 2026: Role-by-Role Benchmarks

Engineering pay in and around Mumbai is set by a different logic to technology pay, and employers who benchmark the two the same way get both wrong. A mechanical design engineer and a software engineer with identical experience can sit fifteen lakh apart, and the reason has little to do with talent. It has to do with who is bidding — and in core engineering, the bidders are manufacturers, EPC contractors, multinationals and, increasingly, engineering global capability centres, each with a distinct pay ceiling and a distinct idea of what a good engineer is worth.

This guide sets out indicative 2026 salary bands for the main engineering roles hired across the Mumbai–Pune–Aurangabad industrial belt, explains what moves an offer within a band, and covers the skills currently carrying a genuine premium. As a recruitment agency in Mumbai that has been placing engineering talent since 2001, we see live offer data across manufacturing, projects and plant operations. Every figure below is an indicative market range compiled from public sources and recruiter observation — actual offers vary considerably by company, city, plant location and negotiation, and should be used for calibration rather than quoted as a rule.

What drives engineering pay in the Mumbai–Pune–Aurangabad belt

Maharashtra’s western industrial corridor is one of the densest engineering employment clusters in India, but it is not uniform. Mumbai holds corporate offices, project management teams, EPC head offices and design centres. Manufacturing sits outside the city — Thane–Belapur, Taloja, Chakan, Ranjangaon, Waluj and Shendra — and pay tracks that geography closely.

Engineering salary benchmarks: Mumbai and the western belt, 2026

Figures are annual fixed CTC in ₹ lakh per annum (LPA), excluding shift allowances, site allowances, performance bonus and relocation support. These are indicative market ranges compiled from public salary sources and recruiter observation across the Mumbai–Pune–Aurangabad belt; they vary by company, city and negotiation and are not authoritative. Read the lower end as domestic manufacturing and smaller EPC firms, the upper end as multinationals, large process industries and engineering GCCs.

Role 0–3 years 3–8 years 8–15 years
Mechanical Design Engineer ₹3–6 LPA ₹7–14 LPA ₹16–28 LPA
Electrical Engineer ₹3–6 LPA ₹7–13 LPA ₹15–26 LPA
Production / Manufacturing Engineer ₹3–5.5 LPA ₹6.5–12 LPA ₹14–24 LPA
Maintenance Engineer ₹3–5.5 LPA ₹6.5–12 LPA ₹14–25 LPA
Quality / QA Engineer ₹3–5.5 LPA ₹6.5–13 LPA ₹15–26 LPA
EHS Officer / Safety Engineer ₹3–5.5 LPA ₹7–13 LPA ₹15–28 LPA

R&D / Product Development Engineer ₹4–7.5 LPA ₹9–18 LPA ₹20–38 LPA

Core sector, EPC, MNC and GCC: four different pay logics

Two engineers with the same degree, the same years and the same competence will be paid differently depending only on who employs them. Understanding why is more useful than the numbers themselves.

The skills carrying a genuine premium

Skill premiums in engineering are narrower than in technology but more durable, because they are harder to acquire from a course. Five stand out in the current market.

  1. Industrial automation and PLC/SCADA. Engineers who can specify, programme and commission automated lines — particularly on Siemens, Rockwell and Mitsubishi platforms — command roughly 15–30% over a comparable production or maintenance engineer. Demand is broad-based across pharma, FMCG, automotive and process plants.
  2. Electric vehicles and battery systems. Battery pack design, BMS, powertrain integration and testing remain supply-constrained. Premiums of 20–40% are common, concentrated in the Pune–Chakan automotive cluster.
  3. Renewables and energy transition. Solar and wind project engineering, grid integration, energy storage and green hydrogen feasibility work have moved from niche to mainstream, and candidates with delivered project experience are scarce.
  4. Industrial IoT and digital manufacturing. Engineers who bridge shopfloor systems and data — condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, MES integration, digital twins — are among the few core profiles competing directly with IT pay.
  5. Lean, Six Sigma and operational excellence. A Black Belt with demonstrated savings is a reliable band-mover for production, quality and plant leadership roles, and one of the few credentials Indian manufacturers consistently pay for.

Price the evidence, not the keyword: the premium attaches to demonstrated delivery, not to the term on the CV. An engineer who has commissioned three automated lines and can walk you through the failures is worth the uplift; one who lists PLC because they attended a vendor training is not. The practical test is to ask for a specific project, then ask what went wrong and what they changed — engineers who have genuinely done the work answer immediately and in detail.

Shift, site and location allowances: the invisible third of the offer

Fixed CTC alone routinely misrepresents engineering compensation, and both employers and candidates get caught out. Shift allowances for rotating patterns typically run ₹200–600 per shift, which adds ₹40,000–1,20,000 annually for an engineer on continuous rotation. Site allowances on EPC projects range from ₹8,000 to ₹35,000 per month depending on remoteness, with hardship postings at the top. Company accommodation, plant transport and canteen facilities carry real value at a remote location and none at a Mumbai office.

The practical consequence is that a ₹9 LPA plant offer in Aurangabad with accommodation, transport and shift allowance can leave an engineer better off than a ₹12 LPA Mumbai office role paying their own rent. Employers hiring for plant locations should quantify this explicitly in the offer conversation instead of losing candidates on the headline number. Reading a total package correctly matters here as much as anywhere — our guide to CTC versus in-hand salary covers the components that mislead most often.

Why core engineering loses talent to IT — and what employers can do

The gap is real and it is structural. A capable mechanical or electrical graduate can move into an IT services or GCC role and, within five years, earn 40–70% more than a peer who stayed in manufacturing. Add the commute difference between a Mumbai office and a plant in Taloja, plus hybrid working that core engineering cannot offer, and the leakage is unsurprising. It concentrates in the 2–6 year band, precisely where employers have invested most in training and recovered least.

Employers cannot close this on cash alone, and those who try end up with distorted internal parity. What does work:

Using these bands without overpaying

Set your band before you meet candidates, based on the scope of the role rather than the current CTC of whoever applies. Two disciplines protect you. Do not anchor on a candidate’s existing package — core engineering is full of capable people who have been underpaid for years, and matching their history perpetuates it while telling you nothing about the role’s worth. And re-benchmark twice a year: EV, renewables and automation bands have moved materially inside twelve-month periods, and a band set in 2024 is quietly costing you shortlists you never see.

Frequently asked questions

How reliable are these engineering salary figures?
They are indicative market ranges compiled from public salary sources and live recruiter observation across the Mumbai–Pune–Aurangabad belt, intended for planning and calibration. They are not precise or authoritative. Real offers vary substantially by company type, plant location, exact skill mix, notice period and negotiation, so benchmark the specific profile you are targeting rather than relying on a category average.
What hike should we budget for an engineering lateral hire?
Plan for 20–30% over current fixed CTC as the working norm — noticeably lower than the 25–35% typical in IT. Budget 35–45% where the candidate brings scarce skills such as EV powertrain, industrial automation or regulated-market quality experience, or where the role involves a location move that increases their cost of living.
Are plant-based roles genuinely harder to fill than corporate ones?
Yes, and the gap has widened. Candidates increasingly weigh location, schooling for children, spouse employment and hybrid availability alongside pay. For plant roles outside the Mumbai metropolitan region, expect a longer search, a smaller shortlist and a higher offer-drop rate. Employers who quantify accommodation, transport and allowances early, and who involve the candidate’s family in the relocation conversation, close materially better.
Should we hire experienced engineers or train freshers?
Both, in a deliberate ratio. Fresher intake from Maharashtra’s engineering colleges is cost-effective and builds loyalty, but takes 12–18 months to reach productivity and carries real attrition risk in the first two years. Experienced hires deliver immediately at a higher cost. Most well-run plants run roughly 60–70% experienced hiring for line-critical positions and use structured fresher intake to build the pipeline beneath them.

Benchmarking your engineering roles

Engineering hiring in Maharashtra is not short of candidates — it is short of the right candidates willing to move to your location on your timeline at your number. The employers who consistently fill these roles are rarely the highest payers. They are the ones with a defensible band, a clear story about progression and ownership, and a process fast enough that a strong engineer is not lost while approvals circulate.
