Trusted Recruitment Partner Since 2001

Recruiters in India spend an average of just six to eight seconds on the first scan of a resume. In that time, they decide whether you move to the shortlist or the reject pile. After two decades of screening candidates for companies across Mumbai and the rest of India, we have seen the same avoidable mistakes sink otherwise strong applications again and again.

Here are the ten resume mistakes we see most often at Ace Corporate Services — and exactly how to fix each one before your next application.

1. A Generic Resume for Every Job

Sending one identical resume to fifty openings is the fastest way to be ignored. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) and recruiters both look for keywords from the job description. Tailor your headline, summary and top skills to each role — even ten minutes of customisation dramatically lifts your shortlist rate.

2. No Measurable Achievements

“Responsible for sales in the western region” tells a recruiter nothing. “Grew western region revenue 32% year-on-year to ₹18 crore” tells them everything. Convert duties into outcomes: numbers, percentages, budgets, team sizes and timelines. If you cannot quantify it, qualify it — name the client, the product or the result.

3. A Vague or Missing Professional Summary

The top third of page one is prime real estate. Use a three-line summary that states your years of experience, your specialisation, and your single biggest proof point. Example: “Finance professional with 8 years in FMCG costing and commercial finance; led a ₹40 crore cost-reduction programme at a listed manufacturer.”

4. Keyword Stuffing That Fools Nobody

Some candidates paste entire job descriptions in white text or cram fifty skills into a block. Modern ATS software flags this, and human recruiters spot it instantly. List only skills you can defend in an interview — depth beats breadth every time.

5. Unexplained Career Gaps

Gaps are not the problem; unexplained gaps are. A single line — further education, family responsibility, sabbatical, layoff during a downturn — removes the question mark. Recruiters in 2026 are far more accepting of career breaks than candidates fear, but silence invites the worst assumption.

6. More Than Two Pages

For professionals with up to 15 years of experience, two pages is the ceiling. Senior leaders may stretch to three. Cut early-career roles down to one line each, remove obsolete skills, and never list every training certificate from the last twenty years.

7. Fancy Formatting That Breaks the ATS

Tables, text boxes, graphics, photos and multi-column layouts often turn to garbage when an ATS parses them. Use a clean single-column layout, standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills), and submit a PDF unless the employer asks for Word format.

8. An Unprofessional Email Address or Missing Contact Details

coolboy_rahul2001@ does not belong on a CV. Create a simple firstname.lastname address. Include your city, phone number and LinkedIn profile — and make sure the LinkedIn profile actually matches the resume. Mismatched dates between the two are one of the most common red flags we verify.

9. Burying the Most Relevant Experience

Recruiters read top-down and rarely finish the page. If the role you want is a project-management role, your project achievements must appear in the first half of page one — not hidden under an older job title on page two. Reorder bullets within each role so the most relevant ones come first.

10. Typos, Inconsistent Dates and Careless Errors

A single spelling mistake will not always disqualify you, but three will. Inconsistent date formats, misaligned bullets and mixed fonts signal carelessness — a fatal impression for any role that demands attention to detail. Proofread, then have one other person proofread again.

The Quick Self-Check Before You Hit Apply

  • Does the top third answer “who are you and why you?” in under ten seconds?
  • Is every bullet an achievement, not a duty?
  • Is it tailored to this specific job description?
  • Will it survive an ATS parse (single column, standard headings, PDF)?
  • Are dates, spelling and formatting flawless?
